Tips for Cleaning Sandblasted Glass with Sealer Coating

This information is primarily intended as a guideline for cleaning sandblasted glass with a sealer coating. For glass raw sandblasted glass, cleaning is different.

  1. Not all glass cleaners are suitable for use on sandblasted glass with sealer coating. Some cleaners have chemicals that will damage the sealer coating. We use a glass cleaner made by Sprayaway with good results. Test your glass cleaner in an inconspicuous place before using in larger areas.

  2. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners.

  3. Do not use alcohol on sandblasted glass with sealer coating.

  4. Do not use heavy detergent solutions (mild is usually better).

  5. Do not use pine-based cleaners.

  6. After applying glass cleaner to the entire surface, it may be rubbed gently with paper towels, cloths or commercial window washing devices. At your option and discretion you may rinse with a flood of clean, clear water. In either case, pat the entire surface dry and allow additional time for the captured moisture to air dry and be released from the sandblasted surface. It is unknown that a squeegee can be used on sandblasted glass with satisfactory results. Be careful.

  7. Do not use applicators, brushes, paper towels or cloths that can leave lint or other residue on the sandblasted surface.

  8. If a spot still exists after washing, a more extreme local treatment might be necessary. Keep in mind that the more attention paid to one spot on the glass, the more likely a visual defect will be noticed after the glass dries out. Further, sealer coating damage may occur as a result of a more intense effort to a local area. Go easy.

  9. Avoid using nylon pads, razor blades, scrapers or anything that would scratch the glass or sealer coating.

  10. Chemicals will remove grease and dirt from the glass surface, however some of these have the potential to damage the sealer coating.

  11. Try a small test area in a less conspicuous place before using any chemical in an open area exposed to full view. This will tell you if the chemical you have chosen will do the job without leaving residue or causing damage.

  12. Be cautious with petroleum base chemicals, some can leave an oily residue.

  13. It is known to Milestone that the backside of most carpeting is extremely abrasive if it comes in contact with the seal coated surface of the glass. You should inform the general contractor and the carpet installer to protect the sandblasted surface from contact by the carpeting prior to the time of carpet installation.

  14. For cleaning raw sandblasted glass, the primary concern is to avoid leftover cleaning residues and also patterns from scrubbing and wiping motions. Consistent, uniform, cleaning motions will lend to the best appearance after drying. The sandblasted surface cannot be damaged from chemicals, but it can be scratched. Alcohol based sealer coatings can be installed on sand blasted glass any time. Insure that the glass is clean prior to application. Sealers can capture dirt and grime permanently.
