Order Desk Helper

Here are a few tips for gathering complete information and avoiding errors when placing orders for sandblasted glass.

  1. Tempered glass can be sandblasted. It cannot be depth carved.

  2. Up to 1/16" deep carving on ½" annealed glass can usually be tempered. (You should inform your customer that tempering any sandblasted or depth carved product is done at their own risk.)

  3. 1/8" tempered glass will only be blasted with fine or extra fine sand at lower than average pressures. This glass has a breakage rate of up to 20%. Should breakage occur, the cost of blasting that lite will still be charged and you will be notified to provide another one for replacement at no extra cost to Milestone. It is at the discretion of Milestone to waive charges for blasting any "redo" glass, otherwise the cost of re-blasting will be charged. Consult the price list for the extra cost involved in blasting 1/8" tempered glass products.

  4. A sketch clearly designating the sandblasted side must accompany each different lite of handed glass. (Handed glass would or could be any of the following; glass with holes, bevels, polished edges, custom edgework, notches, cutouts, irregular shapes, patterns, V-grooved glass, door glass, mirrored glass, reflective glass, coated glass, spandrel glass, painted glass, laminated glass or insulated glass.)

  5. A sketch with layout and dimensions prior to blasting must accompany Glass that has sandblasted lines, logos, patterns or designs. If the pattern is custom and can be received as an electronic file, save and transport as EPS format for PC. The file will be reviewed prior to commencing with the job to determine the usability. Occasionally some rework or clean up is required to be usable. This work is done at an extra cost of $60.00 per hour and extends the lead-time a day or two.

  6. Glass for insulated units can be blasted prior to insulating, sealer coatings are not tested and are not recommended for use on the #2 or the #3 surfaces of insulated units.

  7. Glass can be sandblasted on both sides. (This is acceptable for almost all annealed glass and not recommended for tempered glass thinner than 3/8". Double sided blasting will be done on thinner tempered glass products solely at customers' risk.)

  8. Any customer with glass that has been pre-masked, by them will have blasting done at their own risk. Milestone will not be responsible for determining the suitability of their masking products used for the type of blast requested. Removal of that masking will not be done by Milestone Mfg. (Customer must sign and fax back an acknowledgement waiver)

  9. Milestone can sandblast corporate logos, signage, patterns and custom artwork. This usually requires an electronic file to be sent to us for the creation of the stencil for blasting. The file is most usable in an EPS format (encapsulated postscript). Milestone also does custom design and hand cut patterns. Custom patterns and design are at an extra cost and special quoting is usually necessary.

  10. Glass lites over 75 pounds, 175 pounds and 300 pounds have an additional cost involved for handling. Reference your price list for details.

  11. Maximum glass size is currently 110" X 216".

  12. Laminated glass is very fragile after blasting and can break long after the blasting and seal coating process has been completed. A signed acknowledgement waiver may be required on some jobs.

  13. Sealer coatings can be applied to most glass products, and is recommended to preserve the integrity of the blasted surface from fingerprinting and to aid in cleaning. Milestone specializes in two types of sealer coatings. The first one is our standard sealer and it is a spray on application, done in our shop immediately after the glass has been blasted and usually requires overnight to cure well enough to transport. It is a very durable product in most interior applications. This product should never be transported or installed in wet conditions. It can only be applied to the glass once and is subject to damage if cleaning, handling and shipping instruction are neglected. You can have a copy of these three sets of instructions by logging on to the web at www.milestonemfg.com or by calling 510-581-7400. This sealer is not suitable for glass that has areas that are partially blasted, shaded or clear. For inside shower doors, glass floor surfaces and outdoor applications, the second type of sealer coating will be more appropriate. It is a wipe on sealer in an alcohol carrier and can be reapplied any time to renew the surface. If this product is preferred over the standard sealer, you should note that on our paperwork and call for special pricing. (Other coatings may be applied to the glass surface. They may include but not be limited to, WD40, clear lacquers, clear enamels etc. Some of these might require special permitting to apply and are not available. Call for details.)

  14. Milestone uses different sizes of sand for various textures. Some textures cannot be obtained on tempered glass. As a general rule, the thicker the glass the heavier the sand. Call for details regarding coarse textures on any tempered glass or glass that is going to be tempered. (The same sand used on annealed glass will have a slightly different texture than that of tempered)

  15. Free samples of Milestones standard textures and sealer coating on 8"x8"x¼"annealed glass are available upon request or will call. Custom samples will be at additional cost, call for quotation.

  16. Milestone does sandblasting on architectural wood and metal, call for special pricing and terms. Milestone does not remove rust, paint or sandblast car parts.

  17. Milestone can apply a removable plastic film to the opposite side of sandblasted glass. This is for protection if you are having your glass painted. Also this film can be applied for use in shipping to avoid scratching the non-blasted side. Call for special pricing.

  18. Milestone has equipment for handling crates and "A"-racks up to 3,000 pounds each. (New crating, uncrating, disposal and re-packing are at an additional cost, call for special pricing.)

  19. Milestone has jobsite sandblasting capabilities through its' affiliate company DPS. This service is for specific use and is considerably more costly than sandblasting in the shop environment. Call for more details.

  20. Milestone currently does not have a distribution system, all glass is for will call when completed. Third parties may will-call your glass with your permission and notification to Milestone.

  21. In an effort to maintain product integrity, inclement weather is cause for denying transport of seal coated products on open-air vehicles.

  22. Be on guard for noticing the difference between a hole that is to be drilled in the glass and that of a clear spot in the sandblasted field.

  23. Milestone's daytime phone numbers are 510-581-7400, and Fax 510-581-9903. The web page is www.milestonemfg.com. Click on the "news and notes" page for cleaning instructions, handling instructions, order desk helper, shipping tips and information about sealer coatings.
